On the 28th October 2010 Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, visited Bournemouth School. He arrived by helicopter, which landed on the playing fields of the boys grammar school. The Earl of Wessex learnt about the different stages of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. He was greeted by the headmaster of the grammar school, and the head of the army cadets. Prince Edward was then shown around the school hall, where different activities and examples of the Duke of Edinburgh award were on display. These activities included first aid and how to put up a tent. The army cadet’s band was playing whilst the Earl of Wessex was looking round the hall.

Prince Edward visited the Bishop of Winchester Academy display. He asked who was currently taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and whether or not anyone was planning on taking part in the scheme in the future. We explained that students could chose to take part in the scheme during their enrichment period beginning next term. He also asked a little about The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme itself. I then presented the Earl with a school candle, he asked what the school motto, ‘Sapere Aude’, stood for and I explained that it translated to ‘Have The Courage To Be Wise’. He thanked me before moving on to other displays.
